Ranbir and I share a precious friendship: Deepika
![]() |
| Deepika in different looks |
Deepika is excited about working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, provided it happens. "It would he dream come true to work with him.If he's looking at me for Ram Leela then I'm most certainly looking back at him. The way his heroines' roles are written is incredible."
Deepika's turn as the endearing vixen Veronica has put her in a different league. "I'd say yes, people's reactions have been surprising. I got compliments from my own fraternity. My contemporaries surprised me by saying they cried and identified with Veronica. Someone called it a selfless performance. I liked that.I don't want all these compliments to go to my head. It's never been my intention to go into a different league. I have nothing to prove to anyone except myself.I've to admit people are surprised that I could pull it off. Imtiaz Ali(who wrote Cocktail),director Homi Adjania and producer Dinoo Vijayan had the confidence I could it pull off Veronica.I was offered both the female protagonists' parts, Veronica and Meera. It was Imtiaz who convinced me to take up the unconventional Veronica. We've been friends since Love Aaj Kal. He told me Meera was something similar to what I had done in Love Aaj Kal. Meera is someone I can identify with . But Imtiaz said Veronica would be a bigger challenge.I was ready to take on the risk.So I took on Veronica. Once I accepted I surrendered completely. I am glad it worked. When we were shooting it in London we never expected it would turn out so big."
And to think Deepika didn't think much of the title. "Cocktail was meant to be the tentative title. We did many brainstorming sessions to come up with another title. Finally nothing else worked."
Tell her she and Saif have become like Hema Malini and Dharmendra and Deepika laughs, "Saif says apart from Bebo(Kareena) he hasn't done so many films with any other leading lady. We didn't make a conscious effort to work together. If people like our chemistry, good."
Deepika found the process of playing Veronica liberating. "She isn't a bad character. She is only human.I love the fact that Veronica is who she is and not the least apologetic about it.I'd like to possess the same level of of honesty.Veronica is a lot like my director Homi Adjania. They both wear their heart on their sleeves and don't mince words and are very comfortable about who they are.Homi is the inspiration for my character."
The latest we hear is that she's back together with Ranbir Kapoor and they've rekindled their friendship during the shooting of their latest film.
When asked about the song Deepika is tightlipped. "I'm not telling you anything about Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. It's too early to talk about that film.We still have a long way to go .It's a campus story. My character here is completely different from Veronica in Cocktail. It's a love story , a romcom. But I don't like the term rom-com. It gives a frivolous flavour to a film."
The internet is flooded with reports of Depika getting back together with Ranbir.
She completely refutes the reunion rumours. "We are not seeing each other again. Ranbir and I share a precious friendship. Our focus is to get the film completed.Right now I'm enjoying the success of Cocktail and I don't want to think about anything that takes away from my work. I work really hard. For a couple of years when I was with Ranbir there was too much focus on my personal life."
Deepika Padukone wants to work in Bhansali’s ‘Ram Leela’
Mumbai: Looks like Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Ram Leela’ is going the ‘Heroine’ way – it is becoming Controversy’s favourite child.
Bhansali had wanted Kareena Kapoor to play the lead in the film. But when he realised that by the time the shoot starts, she might be a married woman, he decided to drop her from the project.
And since then, the likes of Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone have been in news over ‘Ram Leela’.
Deepika, who is still basking in the success of her latest ‘Cocktail’, has shown interest in working with Bhansali.
The actress, while talking to a media house said, “It would be like a dream come true to work with him. If he`s looking at me for Ram Leela, I`m most certainly looking forward to working in it. The way his heroines` roles are written, is incredible.”
Veroinca helped Deepika gain recognition as an actress. But it will be interesting to see if Leela can transform her into an ace.
Here’s wishing luck to Dippy!

Sanjay Leela Bhansali selects Deepika over Priyanka
Finally director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has found her heroine for his movie ‘Ram Leela’. Deepika Padukone is the chosen one. In a recent interview an aide close to Sanjay said he wanted an A-list heroine to do his movie. He wanted an actress who was fair and unmarried to play the role of “Juliet” in the movie.
He had approached actress Katrina Kaif for the role but she was too busy with her schedule. Bebo is busy about planning the event to tie the knot with long time beau Saif Ali Khan. Deepika was approached after Kareena decided to disassociate herself from the movie. The marriage which was supposed to be on October 16th has been delayed there after. This is the second time Deepika has beaten Kareena to get a role, the last being ‘Chennai Express’. In this movie she is cast opposite Shahrukh Khan.
The next person on the list was Priyanka Chopra. But apparently Sanjay wasn’t too keen in casting her in his movie and he turned to Deepika Padukone. Deepika was the only one with dates available for his magnum opus. It is being rumored that piggy chops lost to dippy because of her complexion.
Deepika adjusted her dates. She was supposed to be part of a movie under the joint production of Ekta Kapoor and Karan Johar. But the movie got delayed; hence she decided to do Bhansali’s film.
The story of ‘Ram Leela’ is said to be an adaption of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Its cast also includes Ranveer Singh and Supriya Pathak. The detail of the story has not been revealed yet. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is also producing the movie. As always the sets for the movie are going to be elegant. The movie is said to be shot in the interior locations of Gujarat.
The costumes for the movie will be designed to reflect the traditions of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Sanjay has roped in Delhi based designer Anju Modi. Sabyasachi Mukherjee was first touted to be the costume designer. He was the costume designer for Bhansali’s film Black. But Sanjay this time tried to go for traditional ethnic wear. Anju Modi was perfect for that. She said that she was happy to be working with the iconic director and would be designing costumes for Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh. She was not aware at that time that Priyanka will not be a part of the movie.

I don't believe in crash diets: Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone's orange bikini scene from her latest film, Cocktail, has been the talk of the town. The actress says the secret behind her perfect figure is not any crash diet, but a combination of regular workouts and healthy eating.
Deepika said, "I think ideally one should not reach a stage where you have to go on crash diets. You need to be conscious on a daily basis. I feel that this should be your lifestyle."
"For me, working out and eating healthy is a part of my lifestyle. I don't do it for a particular shoot. I know people who eat in a crazy way and suddenly they want a perfect body, and they go on crash diets. That takes a toll on your hormones," she added.
In an industry where size zero seems to be going out to fashion, the 26-year-old says she doesn't mind being a 'healthy' version of it.
"I feel that size doesn't matter, fitness and health should come first. I know people who are heavy, but have great stamina, and I know skinny people with no stamina. It depends on your fitness level. There is nothing wrong with being a size zero as long as it is a healthy size zero," she said.
Talking about her bikini shoot, Deepika says she just had to tweak her workout and diet a bit for the desired results.
"We shot in Cape Town and I did alter my diet for the shoot. But because I have always been fit, I didn't have to go on any type of crash exercise or diet," she said.
Deepika's bold and vivacious character named Veronica in the film has been liked and appreciated by all. She says she is happy to break the perception people had formed of her.
"It's nice to know that people have woken up and realised that there is more to this person than the way she looks. They always associated me with being glamorous and thought that I could do only a certain type of role. I'm happy I managed to break this notion in people's minds," she said.
Styled from head to toe by stylist Anaita Shroff Adjania, Deepika has no qualms in saying that her chic look in Cocktail has been her favourite so far.
But even though she loved it, she would not like to repeat it just for the sake of winning a similar response.
"The idea is not to repeat Cocktail. It (the look) was very apt for that film. I can't use the same look in another film. Of course, I want to experiment with the look, but I am still playing a character and I need to be true to that," she said.

In the age of Multiplexes, failure is a forgotten word. Inspite of the combined reviews it got from the critics, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty starrer 'Cocktail' is minting large cash at the box office. Catchy songs and first-rate advertising are said to be the purpose behind its achievements.
Cocktail was released in most of multiplexes, while it hit small number of single screens. The film authorized a grand starting with its occupancy ranging between 90% and 100% at multiplexes.
After making a 35.65 Crores 1st weekend the movie did somewhat fairly on Monday. The total domestic box-office collections on it's 1st Monday were 6 crores. If you look at the average drop in box office collections it wasn't more than 50% across India.

Saif-Deepika's Cocktail rocks on box office
The 'cocktail' of Deepika, Saif and Diana's talent seems to have wooed the box office. The film is doing well not only in multiplexes, but also in single screens. The movie that made Rs. 10.75 crore on its first day has collected Rs. 36 crore so far.
"#Cocktail collected approx Rs.36 cr nett its opening weekend. Breajup:- Friday 11 cr, Saturday 12 cr, Sunday 13 cr. Extraordinary!" trade expert Taran Adarsh tweeted.
"#Cocktail is remarkable, faring exceptionally well at plexes. Had an extensive release at plexes, but limited screen count at screens," adds Adarsh.
"Cocktail made a decent 10.75 crores on it’s first day at the Indian box-office. It was amazing to see North Indian’s states occupied about 90-100% on it’s 1st day. The 1st day collections was mainly from urban multiplexes but as the weekend dawned the movie got a stronger hold on single screen theaters as well," reports koimoi.com.
"The movie made 11.90 crores on it’s 1st Saturday," adds koimoi.com.
"Tracking #Cocktail business on Day 2 in India. Saturday *initial trends* seems 11.75 cr to 12 cr nett. May even cross 12 cr. Superb!" tweeted trade expert Taran Adarsh.
"#Cocktail is undoubtedly one of the biggest openers of the year. Great to witness swelling crowds outside cineplexes," Adarsh added.
Overall weekend collection
"Sunday saw the movie scaling a new height with a 13 crore box office collection. The 1st weekend box office collection of the film now stands at 35.65 crores," informs koimoi.com.
Critics Verdict
"The writing is enhanced by the performances. The big surprise here is Deepika, who moves beyond her usual statuesque mannequin pose and gets into the skin of the emotionally raw and needy poor little rich girl. This is easily her best performance to date. Saif is an old hand at these sorts of roles but here he really ramps up the charm and even pulls off a scene that has him doing a Tom-Cruise-on-a-couch jump as he wears red lipstick and a negligee. Diana is saddled with the most colourless character but she infuses her role with a quiet poise and holds her own," wrote Anupama Chopra, Hindustan Times.

‘Cocktail’ Review: It is a heady mix of varied human emotions!
If you put three different people under one roof, throw in some fun, drama and lend a touch of romance to the plot- what you get is a savory mix of a ‘Cocktail’ which is worth every buck you spent to relish it.
Yes, that is what Homi Adajania’s newest work is all about. Post his previous off-beat venture ‘Being Cyrus’ that got massive critical acclaim, the man has hit the nail on its head once again with the flick that stars Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan and young turk Diana Penty.
So here we are introduced to the tamed Meera (played by Diana Penty), who lands up in the city of London to meet her husband Rahul (played by Randeep Hooda). To her utter dismay, Rahul ruthlessly turns her away after conning her off all her money and leaves her on the street without a roof in an alien land. She chances upon spoilt, rich bitch Veronica who parties hard, drinks like a fish but has a heart of gold. She pities Meera and takes her under her shelter and soon they become the best of friends.
Enter Gautam (played by Saif), who flirts with every hot chick in the town with his cheesy one liners. Chances bring the three main protagonists together under the same roof as Veronica and Gautam start a casual fling without any commitment. However, things take a U-turn when Gautam and Meera fall for each other on a serious note during their South Africa holiday while Veronica realises that Gautam is THE man she must settle down with. Then what begins is a roller coaster ride of emotions, drama and fallouts amidst the trio.
Going by Deepika Padukone’s performance, this is one of her best so far. She hits the bulls eye with her portrayal of Veronica. Deepika manages to highlight the intricacies of the psyche of a woman who has had a troubled childhood, which propelled her to seek refuge in alcohol and hard core partying.
Saif too has his own moments in the movie such as the one in which he hilariously dances wearing lingerie and make up and gets caught by his mother (played by Dimple Kapadia) during his live performance.
On the other hand, Diana Penty looks fresh as a daisy on screen but needs to polish her acting skills a tad more if she intends to survive the rat race.
For those who have loved Saif and Deepika’s ‘Love Aajkal’, ‘Cocktail’ will not disappoint you as it has some shades of the former. The storyline of the movie is gripping and will keep you hooked and booked.
Talking about the songs, they are as foot tapping as they could get. “Tumhi Ho Bandhu” deserves a special mention here as it will make you get up from your seats and shake a leg as the song is played on the big screen. The locations of the movie are eye catching and the styling of the actors is in sync with their onscreen characters.
Final verdict: ‘Cocktail’ is worth a try!
Rating: Three cheers for this one!

Why Diana does not want to do Deepika's Cocktail's role?
Diana Penty is making her Bollywood debut with Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone starer Cocktail. The model-turned actress, who is playing Meera in the movie, says that if the director had asked her to play Deepika Padukone's role of Veronica, she would have said no.
When a website interviewed Diana Penty and asked if she was offered the role of Veronica (played by Deepika), would she be able to pull off the bikini act?
To which Diana replied, "No, I don't think I would be able to do that. I have some reservations about how far I would wish to go. I would not be comfortable doing bikini acts and intimate scenes."
Diana Penty also said, "I am not a trained actor, but it helped a lot that I could completely relate to the character of Meera that I play in Cocktail. I was amazed to see the way Saif and Deepika improvised while we were shooting the scenes. I kept wondering how they managed to do so. I would give a lot of credit for my performance to Homi, because he knew exactly what he wanted from his actors."
Well Diana, we wish you luck for your first Bollywood movie.

Bollywood Insider: Deepika Padukone isn't worried about Cocktail's success
Even as Deepika Padukone's latest film Cocktail has garnered positive reviews for its music and look, the actress says she is not bothered about Cocktail's Box Office results. "This film is very special to me. Personally it has been a journey for me as an actor as I have invested in this film physically, mentally and emotionally. I want people to enjoy and feel for the film as I do. I am not concerned about box office, I don't care how much money it earns," Deepika told reporters.
The Homi Adajania-directed romantic comedy Cocktail stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and debutante Diana Penty, besides Dimple Kapadia and Boman Irani. "For me money does not matter. I want people to enjoy the film. Critics and people enjoy it, in that case if the film earns money then its good," she said. Cocktail is a story of three friends - Gautam (Saif), a flirt; Meera (Diana), a girl with desi values; and Veronica (Deepika) who is a bold and outspoken. The film is about how the friendship becomes confusing and love gets complicated. "The film is a journey of three friends of different personalities and then how love happens is a cocktail," Deepika said.
Deepika was offered both the roles of Meera and Veronica, but she chose to play the latter. "This role was most challenging as I have come out of my comfort zone. I have taken a risk. When Dinesh Vijan (producer) asked me to pick up a role out of the two - Meera or Veronica. I thought I have already done something like Meera in Love Aaj Kal so why to repeat same thing, hence I chose Veronica. To play Meera would be similar and Veronica is new and challenging," she said.

NRIs would love to see 'Cocktail': Saif Ali Khan
London: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, who is gearing up for the release of his latest movie 'Cocktail', says the film has 'everything overseas and Indian audience would love to see.' "The film could connect to rural areas as well," Saif told PTI.
'Cocktail' is a romantic comedy directed by Homi Adajania of 'Being Cyrus' fame and will release world-wide on July 13.
This will be the third time that Saif and Deepika Padukone will be seen together in a film, after 'Love Aaj Kal' and 'Aarakshan'.

The film follows the three main characters, played by Saif, Deepika and newcomer Diana Panty.
When 24-year-old Veronica (Deepika) and Meera, 23, start living together during the summer in London, they have very different agendas. Meera is awkward, introvert and recovering from a hoax marriage to Kunal Ahuja who has duped her off her life-savings by using the pretense of setting up a base for them in London.
She is spending her time under Veronica's roof until she can get some footing and find a job in this foreign land.
Veronica, on the other hand, is a wild-child, impulsive, constantly looking for distractions to escape facing issues of a troubled upbringing. Being poles apart brings the two close, forging a loyal and solid friendship.
Soon Gautam, 32, (Saif) enters their lives, moves in with them and has a whirlwind relationship with Veronica much to Meera's protective disapproval. Meera does not like Gautam because his don't-give-a-damn attitude reminds her of her selfish husband who had conned her into coming to London in the first place.
Both Gautam and Veronica believe in living for the moment and they honestly consider this a fling rather than a serious relationship. But as three people living together they all have a blast... Though their intentions for each other don't change, their friendship starts to grow strong. It becomes a beautifully balanced friendship between three people.
According to Saif, the film is a contemporary story about the interplay between friendship and romantic love and how in the truest sense one really can't exist without the other.
The film was shot in London and Capetown. Asked about his marriage to Kareena Kapoor, Saif said it would be held by this year end.

Indian body type not suited for a bikini: Deepika Padukone
Mumbai: Actress Deepika Padukone would be seen flaunting a bikini in her forthcoming film 'Cocktail', but the actress feels that Indian body type is not naturally suited for the costume.
"I wish it was so easy and natural. I think the Indian body type is somehow not suited for a bikini. We as Indians have to work a little extra hard if we wish to carry it off," the 26-year-old said here Thursday while unveiling the Melange Cocktail fashion collection.
Talking about her regime for the bikini shot, she said, "I changed my workout slightly. Basically, I just had to sacrifice going out for dinners every time Dino (producer Dinesh Vijan) took the cast out for dinners. I would just sit in my room alone and ate steamed fish and not have any dessert."
But once the shoot was over, Deepika let herself loose.
"I remember being so disciplined that the day I finished the bikini shoot and I knew I could start eating normally. He (Vijan) took me out for dinner and I had this big chocolate dessert. Food and desserts, I think the restaurant ran out of food," said Deepika humorously.
The film also stars Saif Ali Khan and model Diana Penty and hits theatres on July 13.
