Rachel Weisz goes for dramatic new look in Vanity Fair shoot as she turns action girl in 007 rival Bourne Legacy

Thirteen years after she leaped to fame in The Mummy, Rachel Weisz is returning to the action genre.

And as she prepares to show how tough she is in new thriller The Bourne Legacy, the 42-year-old has embraced a darker, dramatic look in a new photoshoot for Vanity Fair magazine.

Showing off her curves in a snakeskin Tom Ford dress, Mrs Daniel Craig speaks of her excitement at joining the new film franchise.

The Bourne Legacy is the first of the franchise without former leading man Matt Damon as Jason Bourne with The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner playing a secret agent Aaron Cross.

Weisz is cast as virologist Marta Shearing, who teams up with Aaron to escape a CIA plot to have them assassinated.

The mother-of-one tells the August edition of the magazine: 'It's much scarier; there's a whole world behind the one you’ve watched in the first three.

'I could identify with her character, ill-equipped to deal with the high-stakes drama. We are lone survivors, me and Jeremy Renner, and all the science is possible. It is not sci-fi - the level of realism is very, very high.'

Writer-director Tony Gilroy admitted the Oscar-winning actress provokes 'chaos' on set.

He told the magazine: 'She provokes chaos. She has her own navigational system that clicks on like an emergency beacon when everything’s going wrong. I’ve never put a character through such an ordeal before.

'It all has to be plausible. Rachel has got to convince us she’s an accomplished scientist, be able to convey a shattered personal life, bring a mantle of dead ends in her life to the screen. And in the end she has to kick some f**king ass.'

The full interview is in the August issue of Vanity Fair magazine, on sale now.
